Infinitives
(To + Verb)

To go, To eat, To sleep, To succeed.

Definition: An Infinitive is the base form of a verb, usually preceded by "To". It functions as a Noun, Adjective, or Adverb, not as the main verb.
(Infinitive 'To' + 'Verb' का रूप है जो संज्ञा (Noun) या उद्देश्य बताने के लिए प्रयोग होता है।)

1. As a Noun (Subject or Object)

Used to name an action.

Type Sentence Hindi Meaning
Subject To walk is healthy. टहलना स्वास्थ्य के लिए अच्छा है।
Subject To err is human. गलती करना इंसानी फितरत है।
Object I want to go. मैं जाना चाहता हूँ।
Object He likes to play. उसे खेलना पसंद है।

2. Purpose (उद्देश्य - Why?)

Used to explain why someone does something.

Sentence Why? (Purpose) Hindi Meaning
I went to the market to buy milk. Why? To buy. मैं दूध खरीदने के लिए बाजार गया।
She studies hard to pass. Why? To pass. वह पास होने के लिए मेहनत करती है।

3. Bare Infinitive (Without "To")

Sometimes we use the verb without "to". This is called a Bare Infinitive.

When to use: After Modals (can, must, should) and verbs like "Let", "Make", "See".

Comparison: Gerund vs Infinitive

Gerund (V + ing) Infinitive (To + V)
Swimming is good. To swim is good.
I like playing. I like to play.
Meaning is almost the same in these cases.
