The Dog and the Shadow

Once upon a time, there lived a street dog. एक समय की बात है, एक गली का कुत्ता रहता था। His name was Sheru. उसका नाम शेरू था। Sheru was a very big and strong dog. शेरू बहुत बड़ा और ताकतवर कुत्ता था। But he had one very bad habit. लेकिन उसकी एक बहुत बुरी आदत थी। He was extremely greedy. वह बेहद लालची था। He was never satisfied with what he had. उसके पास जो कुछ भी था उससे वह कभी संतुष्ट नहीं होता था। He always wanted more food. वह हमेशा और अधिक भोजन चाहता था। He often stole food from other smaller dogs. वह अक्सर दूसरे छोटे कुत्तों से खाना चुरा लेता था। He would bark and scare them away. वह भौंकता और उन्हें डराकर भगा देता। Because of this, he had no friends. इस वजह से उसका कोई दोस्त नहीं था। He wandered around the streets alone. वह अकेले ही गलियों में भटकता रहता था। He spent his whole day looking for food. वह अपना पूरा दिन भोजन की तलाश में बिताता था। Sometimes he found bread, sometimes bones. कभी उसे रोटी मिलती, कभी हड्डियाँ। But his hunger was never-ending. लेकिन उसकी भूख कभी खत्म नहीं होती थी।

One afternoon, Sheru was very hungry. एक दोपहर, शेरू बहुत भूखा था। He had not eaten anything since morning. उसने सुबह से कुछ नहीं खाया था। His stomach was growling loudly. उसका पेट जोर-जोर से गुड़गुड़ा रहा था। He walked through the busy market. वह व्यस्त बाजार से गुजरा। He sniffed around every dustbin. उसने हर कूड़ेदान के आसपास सूंघा। But he could not find any good food. लेकिन उसे कोई अच्छा खाना नहीं मिला। He felt very weak and tired. वह बहुत कमजोर और थका हुआ महसूस कर रहा था। Suddenly, a delicious smell reached his nose. अचानक, एक स्वादिष्ट गंध उसकी नाक तक पहुँची। It was the smell of fresh meat. यह ताजे मांस की गंध थी। He followed the smell eagerly. उसने उत्सुकता से गंध का पीछा किया। He reached the back of a butcher's shop. वह कसाई की दुकान के पीछे पहुँचा। The butcher was busy cutting meat inside. कसाई अंदर मांस काटने में व्यस्त था। Sheru stood near the door and waited. शेरू दरवाजे के पास खड़ा हो गया और इंतजार करने लगा। He hoped the butcher would throw something. उसे उम्मीद थी कि कसाई कुछ फेंकेगा।

Luck was on Sheru's side that day. उस दिन शेरू की किस्मत अच्छी थी। The butcher saw the hungry dog. कसाई ने भूखे कुत्ते को देखा। He was a kind-hearted man. वह एक दयालु आदमी था। He picked up a large bone from the table. उसने मेज से एक बड़ी हड्डी उठाई। The bone had a lot of juicy meat on it. हड्डी पर बहुत सारा रसीला मांस था। He threw the bone towards Sheru. उसने हड्डी शेरू की ओर फेंक दी। Sheru caught the bone in his mouth. शेरू ने हड्डी अपने मुंह में पकड़ ली। He wagged his tail happily. उसने खुशी से अपनी पूंछ हिलाई। He could not believe his good luck. उसे अपनी अच्छी किस्मत पर विश्वास नहीं हो रहा था। It was the biggest bone he had ever seen. यह अब तक की सबसे बड़ी हड्डी थी जो उसने देखी थी। He wanted to eat it all by himself. वह इसे अकेले ही खाना चाहता था। He did not want to share it with anyone. वह इसे किसी के साथ साझा नहीं करना चाहता था। "I must go to a safe place," he thought. "मुझे किसी सुरक्षित जगह जाना चाहिए," उसने सोचा। "Other dogs might try to steal it." "दूसरे कुत्ते इसे चुराने की कोशिश कर सकते हैं।" So, he ran away from the market quickly. इसलिए, वह बाजार से जल्दी भाग गया।

Sheru ran towards the forest. शेरू जंगल की ओर भागा। He held the bone tightly in his jaws. उसने हड्डी को अपने जबड़ों में कसकर पकड़ रखा था। He ran past the houses and fields. वह घरों और खेतों के पास से दौड़ा। He wanted to reach the other side of the stream. वह धारा (नदी) के दूसरी तरफ पहुँचना चाहता था। There was a quiet spot under a tree there. वहाँ एक पेड़ के नीचे शांत जगह थी। It was his favorite place to eat. यह खाने के लिए उसकी पसंदीदा जगह थी। To reach there, he had to cross a bridge. वहाँ पहुँचने के लिए, उसे एक पुल पार करना था। It was a small wooden bridge over a stream. यह एक धारा के ऊपर एक छोटा लकड़ी का पुल था। The water in the stream was very clear. धारा का पानी बहुत साफ था। It was flowing gently and quietly. यह धीरे-धीरे और शांति से बह रहा था। Sheru started walking on the bridge. शेरू पुल पर चलने लगा। His footsteps made a "thud thud" sound. उसके कदमों ने "धड़ धड़" की आवाज की। He was half-way across the bridge. वह पुल के आधे रास्ते पर था। He stopped to look down at the water. वह पानी की ओर नीचे देखने के लिए रुका।

Sheru looked into the clear water below. शेरू ने नीचे साफ पानी में देखा। He saw his own reflection in the water. उसने पानी में अपनी परछाई देखी। But Sheru was a foolish dog. लेकिन शेरू एक मूर्ख कुत्ता था। He did not know it was a reflection. उसे नहीं पता था कि यह एक परछाई है। He thought it was another dog. उसने सोचा कि यह कोई दूसरा कुत्ता है। He stared at the "other dog" angrily. उसने गुस्से से "दूसरे कुत्ते" को घूरा। The other dog stared back at him. दूसरे कुत्ते ने भी उसे वापस घूरा। Sheru noticed something in the other dog's mouth. शेरू ने दूसरे कुत्ते के मुंह में कुछ देखा। It was a large, juicy bone. यह एक बड़ी, रसीली हड्डी थी। Because of the water, the reflection looked big. पानी की वजह से, परछाई बड़ी दिख रही थी। So, the bone also looked much bigger. इसलिए, हड्डी भी बहुत बड़ी लग रही थी। Sheru's greed started to grow again. शेरू का लालच फिर से बढ़ने लगा। He looked at his own bone. उसने अपनी हड्डी को देखा। Then he looked at the bone in the water. फिर उसने पानी वाली हड्डी को देखा। "That dog has a bigger bone," he thought. "उस कुत्ते के पास बड़ी हड्डी है," उसने सोचा।

Sheru became very jealous. शेरू को बहुत जलन हुई। "Why should he have a better bone?" he thought. "उसके पास बेहतर हड्डी क्यों होनी चाहिए?" उसने सोचा। "I am stronger than him." "मैं उससे ज्यादा ताकतवर हूँ।" "I want that bone too." "मुझे वह हड्डी भी चाहिए।" "If I get that bone, I will have two." "अगर मुझे वह हड्डी मिल जाए, तो मेरे पास दो होंगी।" "Then I can have a grand feast." "फिर मैं एक शानदार दावत कर सकता हूँ।" He forgot about the food in his mouth. वह अपने मुंह के खाने के बारे में भूल गया। His eyes were fixed on the reflection. उसकी नजरें परछाई पर टिकी थीं। He decided to scare the other dog. उसने दूसरे कुत्ते को डराने का फैसला किया। He thought the other dog would drop the bone. उसने सोचा कि दूसरा कुत्ता हड्डी गिरा देगा। He prepared to bark loudly. उसने जोर से भौंकने की तैयारी की। He made a growling face at the water. उसने पानी की ओर गुर्राने वाला चेहरा बनाया। The dog in the water did the same. पानी वाले कुत्ते ने भी वैसा ही किया। This made Sheru even more angry. इससे शेरू को और ज्यादा गुस्सा आ गया।

Sheru opened his mouth to bark. शेरू ने भौंकने के लिए अपना मुंह खोला। "Bow! Wow!" he barked loudly. "भौंप! भौंप!" वह जोर से भौंका। As soon as he opened his mouth, it happened. जैसे ही उसने अपना मुंह खोला, यह हो गया। The bone slipped from his teeth. हड्डी उसके दांतों से फिसल गई। It fell straight into the deep river. वह सीधे गहरी नदी में गिर गई। "Splash!" went the bone into the water. "छपाक!" हड्डी पानी में चली गई। The water splashed and ripples formed. पानी छलक गया और लहरें बन गईं। The reflection of the dog disappeared in the ripples. कुत्ते की परछाई लहरों में गायब हो गई। Sheru watched in horror as his bone sank. शेरू ने दहशत में देखा कि उसकी हड्डी डूब गई। It went down to the bottom of the stream. वह धारा की तलहटी में चली गई। He could not reach it anymore. वह अब उस तक नहीं पहुँच सकता था। The current of the river washed it away. नदी का बहाव उसे बहा ले गया। Sheru stood there stunned and shocked. शेरू वहां सन्न और हैरान खड़ा रहा।

He realized there was no other dog. उसे एहसास हुआ कि कोई दूसरा कुत्ता नहीं था। It was just his own shadow and reflection. वह बस उसकी अपनी छाया और परछाई थी। Because of his greed, he lost what he had. अपने लालच की वजह से, उसने जो उसके पास था उसे खो दिया। He had a delicious meal in his mouth. उसके मुंह में एक स्वादिष्ट भोजन था। But he threw it away for nothing. लेकिन उसने इसे बेकार में फेंक दिया। He felt foolish and ashamed. वह मूर्ख और शर्मिंदा महसूस कर रहा था। His stomach growled again in hunger. उसका पेट भूख से फिर से गुड़गुड़ाने लगा। He had to go back to the streets hungry. उसे भूखे पेट वापस गलियों में जाना पड़ा। He walked back slowly with his head down. वह अपना सिर नीचे करके धीरे-धीरे वापस चला। He learned a painful lesson that day. उस दिन उसने एक दर्दनाक सबक सीखा। We should be happy with what we have. हमें जो हमारे पास है उससे खुश रहना चाहिए। Greed makes us lose even our own belongings. लालच हमसे अपनी चीजें भी खो देता है। Sheru never forgot that day on the bridge. शेरू पुल पर उस दिन को कभी नहीं भूला।
