The Elephants and the Moon God
(हाथी और चंद्र देव)

Once upon a time, there was a great jungle. एक समय की बात है, एक बहुत बड़ा जंगल था। A large herd of elephants lived there. वहाँ हाथियों का एक बड़ा झुंड रहता था। They had a mighty King named Gajapati. उनका एक शक्तिशाली राजा था जिसका नाम गजपति था। He was very strong and wise. वह बहुत बलवान और बुद्धिमान था। One year, there was no rain. एक वर्ष, बारिश नहीं हुई। The sun shone very brightly every day. सूरज हर दिन बहुत तेजी से चमकता था। All the rivers and ponds dried up. सभी नदियाँ और तालाब सूख गए। The trees lost their green leaves. पेड़ों ने अपने हरे पत्ते खो दिए। The animals began to suffer from thirst. जानवर प्यास से तड़पने लगे। Many young elephants were dying. कई युवा हाथी मर रहे थे। The King was very worried about his herd. राजा अपने झुंड को लेकर बहुत चिंतित था। "We must find water soon," he said. "हमें जल्द ही पानी खोजना होगा," उसने कहा। "Otherwise, we will all die." "हाँ, मेरे साथ अकेले आओ," सिल्की ने कहा। It was night time by now. अब तक रात हो चुकी थी। The full moon was shining in the sky. आसमान में पूरा चाँद चमक रहा था। Silky led the elephant to the lake. सिल्की हाथी को झील के पास ले गया। The water was still and clear. पानी स्थिर और साफ था। The reflection of the moon was in the water. पानी में चाँद का प्रतिबिंब था। It looked like the moon was inside the lake. ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे चाँद झील के अंदर है। "Look," whispered Silky. "देखो," सिल्की ने फुसफुसाया। "He is meditating in the water." "वे पानी में ध्यान कर रहे हैं।" "Do not disturb him, or he will wake up." "उन्हें परेशान मत करो, वरना वे जाग जाएंगे।" The elephant looked at the reflection. हाथी ने प्रतिबिंब को देखा। He thought it was truly the God. उसने सोचा कि यह सचमुच भगवान हैं।

"Bow down and ask for forgiveness," said Silky. The Elephant King ran back to his herd. हाथी राजा अपने झुंड की ओर वापस भागा। He told them about the angry God. उसने उन्हें क्रोधित भगवान के बारे में बताया। "We must leave immediately," he ordered.
