The Honest Woodcutter
(ईमानदार लकड़हारा)

Once upon a time, there lived a poor woodcutter. एक समय की बात है, एक गरीब लकड़हारा रहता था। His name was Gopal. उसका नाम गोपाल था। He lived in a very small hut. वह एक बहुत छोटी झोपड़ी में रहता था। The hut was located near a dense forest. झोपड़ी एक घने जंगल के पास स्थित थी। Gopal was a very hardworking man. गोपाल बहुत मेहनती आदमी था। He woke up early every morning. वह रोज सुबह जल्दी उठता था। He picked up his sharp iron axe. वह अपनी तेज लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी उठाता था। He went into the forest to cut wood. वह लकड़ी काटने के लिए जंगल में जाता था। He chopped dry branches from the trees. वह पेड़ों से सूखी टहनियाँ काटता था। He tied them into a large bundle. वह उन्हें एक बड़े बंडल में बांधता था। Then, he sold the wood in the market. फिर, वह लकड़ी को बाजार में बेचता था। With the money, he bought food for his family. पैसों से, वह अपने परिवार के लिए खाना खरीदता था। He earned very little money daily. वह रोजाना बहुत कम पैसा कमाता था। But he was happy and content. लेकिन वह खुश और संतुष्ट था। He never cheated anyone in his life. उसने अपने जीवन में कभी किसी को धोखा नहीं दिया। Honesty was his greatest treasure. ईमानदारी उसका सबसे बड़ा खजाना था।

One hot summer day, he was working. गर्मी के एक दिन, वह काम कर रहा था। He was cutting wood near a river. वह नदी के पास लकड़ी काट रहा था। The river was very deep and wide. नदी बहुत गहरी और चौड़ी थी। The water flowed very fast there. वहाँ पानी बहुत तेज बहता था। Gopal found a big dry tree on the bank. गोपाल को किनारे पर एक बड़ा सूखा पेड़ मिला। He started chopping a thick branch. उसने एक मोटी शाखा काटना शुरू कर दिया। "Chop! Chop! Chop!" went his axe. "खट! खट! खट!" उसकी कुल्हाड़ी चली। He was sweating because of the heat. गर्मी की वजह से उसे पसीना आ रहा था। His hands were slippery with sweat. उसके हाथ पसीने से फिसल रहे थे। Suddenly, a terrible thing happened. अचानक, एक भयानक बात हुई। The axe slipped from his hands. कुल्हाड़ी उसके हाथों से फिसल गई। It flew straight into the deep river. वह सीधे गहरी नदी में जा गिरी। "Splash!" went the heavy iron axe. "छपाक!" भारी लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी गिरी। It sank to the bottom immediately. वह तुरंत नीचे डूब गई।

Gopal was shocked and terrified. गोपाल हैरान और भयभीत था। He ran to the edge of the water. वह पानी के किनारे भागा। He looked into the flowing river. उसने बहती नदी में देखा। But he could not see his axe. लेकिन उसे अपनी कुल्हाड़ी दिखाई नहीं दी। The water was too deep for him. पानी उसके लिए बहुत गहरा था। He did not know how to swim. उसे तैरना नहीं आता था। He sat down and started crying. वह बैठ गया और रोने लगा। "Oh God! What will I do now?" he cried. "हे भगवान! अब मैं क्या करूँगा?" वह रोया। "That was my only axe." "वह मेरी एकमात्र कुल्हाड़ी थी।" "I have no money to buy a new one." "मेरे पास नई खरीदने के लिए पैसे नहीं हैं।" "How will I feed my children today?" "आज मैं अपने बच्चों को क्या खिलाऊंगा?" He cried loudly in despair. वह निराशा में जोर-जोर से रोया। His tears fell into the river water. उसके आँसू नदी के पानी में गिर गए।

The River Goddess heard his crying. नदी की देवी ने उसका रोना सुना। She felt pity for the poor man. उन्हें गरीब आदमी पर दया आ गई। She decided to help him out. उन्होंने उसकी मदद करने का फैसला किया। Suddenly, a bright light appeared in the water. अचानक, पानी में एक तेज रोशनी दिखाई दी। The Goddess emerged from the waves. देवी लहरों से बाहर निकलीं। She was very beautiful and shining. वह बहुत सुंदर और चमकदार थीं। "Why are you crying, my son?" she asked. "तुम क्यों रो रहे हो, मेरे बेटे?" उन्होंने पूछा। Gopal looked at her with teary eyes. गोपाल ने उन्हें नम आँखों से देखा। He folded his hands in respect. उसने सम्मान में अपने हाथ जोड़ लिए। "Mother, I lost my axe," he sobbed. "माँ, मैंने अपनी कुल्हाड़ी खो दी," वह सिसका। "It fell into your deep water." "यह आपके गहरे पानी में गिर गई।" "It is my only source of income." "यह मेरी आय का एकमात्र स्रोत है।" The Goddess smiled gently at him. देवी ने उस पर धीरे से मुस्कुराया। "Do not worry, I will find it," she said. "चिंता मत करो, मैं इसे ढूंढ लूँगी," उन्होंने कहा।

The Goddess dived into the water. देवी ने पानी में डुबकी लगाई। After a moment, she came back up. एक पल के बाद, वह वापस ऊपर आईं। She was holding a shining axe. उन्होंने एक चमकती हुई कुल्हाड़ी पकड़ रखी थी। It was made of pure gold. यह शुद्ध सोने की बनी थी। It glittered brightly in the sunlight. यह धूप में तेजी से चमक रही थी। "Is this your axe, my son?" she asked. "क्या यह तुम्हारी कुल्हाड़ी है, मेरे बेटे?" उन्होंने पूछा। Gopal looked at the golden axe. गोपाल ने सोने की कुल्हाड़ी को देखा। He knew it was very valuable. वह जानता था कि यह बहुत कीमती है। He could sell it and become rich. वह इसे बेचकर अमीर बन सकता था। But he was an honest man. लेकिन वह एक ईमानदार आदमी था। "No, Mother," said Gopal firmly. "नहीं, माँ," गोपाल ने दृढ़ता से कहा। "This is a golden axe." "यह सोने की कुल्हाड़ी है।" "My axe is made of iron." "मेरी कुल्हाड़ी लोहे की बनी है।" "This does not belong to me." "यह मेरी नहीं है।" The Goddess was pleased with his answer. देवी उसके उत्तर से प्रसन्न हुईं।

The Goddess dived into the water again. देवी ने फिर से पानी में डुबकी लगाई। This time, she brought another axe. इस बार, वह एक और कुल्हाड़ी लाईं। It was made of shining silver. यह चमकते हुए चांदी की बनी थी। It looked very beautiful and expensive. यह बहुत सुंदर और महंगी लग रही थी। "Is this your axe?" asked the Goddess. "क्या यह तुम्हारी कुल्हाड़ी है?" देवी ने पूछा। Gopal looked at the silver axe carefully. गोपाल ने चांदी की कुल्हाड़ी को ध्यान से देखा। "No, Mother, this is not mine," he said. "नहीं, माँ, यह मेरी नहीं है," उसने कहा। "This is a silver axe." "यह चांदी की कुल्हाड़ी है।" "My axe is old and dirty." "मेरी कुल्हाड़ी पुरानी और गंदी है।" "I cannot take what is not mine." "मैं वह नहीं ले सकता जो मेरा नहीं है।" The Goddess was very happy now. देवी अब बहुत खुश थीं। She had tested his honesty twice. उन्होंने दो बार उसकी ईमानदारी की परीक्षा ली थी। He passed the test both times. वह दोनों बार परीक्षा में पास हुआ।

She went down for the third time. वह तीसरी बार नीचे गईं। When she came up, she held an iron axe. जब वह ऊपर आईं, तो उन्होंने लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी पकड़ रखी थी। It had a worn-out wooden handle. उसमें घिसा हुआ लकड़ी का हत्था था। It looked old and rusty. यह पुरानी और जंग लगी लग रही थी। Gopal jumped up with joy. गोपाल खुशी से उछल पड़ा। "Yes! Yes! That is mine!" he shouted. "हाँ! हाँ! वह मेरी है!" वह चिल्लाया। "Thank you, Mother! You saved me." "धन्यवाद, माँ! आपने मुझे बचा लिया।" "This is my humble axe." "यह मेरी साधारण कुल्हाड़ी है।" The Goddess came to the bank. देवी किनारे पर आईं। "I am very proud of you, Gopal," she said. "मुझे तुम पर बहुत गर्व है, गोपाल," उन्होंने कहा। "You are a truly honest man." "तुम सचमुच एक ईमानदार आदमी हो।" "You did not take the gold or silver." "तुमने सोना या चांदी नहीं लिया।" "As a reward, take all three axes." "इनाम के तौर पर, तीनों कुल्हाड़ियाँ ले लो।" Gopal could not believe his luck. गोपाल को अपनी किस्मत पर विश्वास नहीं हुआ। He thanked the Goddess again and again. उसने बार-बार देवी को धन्यवाद दिया। He went home a very rich man. वह एक बहुत अमीर आदमी बनकर घर गया।

Gopal told his story to his friends. गोपाल ने अपनी कहानी अपने दोस्तों को सुनाई। Soon, everyone in the village knew. जल्द ही, गाँव में सब जान गए। Gopal had a neighbor named Kalu. गोपाल का एक पड़ोसी था जिसका नाम कालू था। Kalu was very greedy and jealous. कालू बहुत लालची और ईर्ष्यालु था। He wanted the gold axes too. वह भी सोने की कुल्हाड़ियाँ चाहता था। "I will do the same thing," thought Kalu. "मैं भी वही करूँगा," कालू ने सोचा। The next morning, Kalu went to the river. अगली सुबह, कालू नदी पर गया। He took an old iron axe with him. वह अपने साथ एक पुरानी लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी ले गया। He stood near the same spot. वह उसी जगह के पास खड़ा हो गया। He started cutting a tree. उसने एक पेड़ काटना शुरू किया। Then, he purposely threw his axe into the river. फिर, उसने जानबूझकर अपनी कुल्हाड़ी नदी में फेंक दी। "Splash!" it fell into the water. "छपाक!" वह पानी में गिर गई। Kalu sat down and started crying loudly. कालू बैठ गया और जोर-जोर से रोने लगा। "Help! Help! My axe is gone!" he screamed. "मदद! मदद! मेरी कुल्हाड़ी चली गई!" वह चीखा। He cried fake tears to call the Goddess. उसने देवी को बुलाने के लिए नकली आँसू बहाए।

The River Goddess heard him. नदी की देवी ने उसे सुना। She appeared again from the water. वह फिर से पानी से प्रकट हुईं। "Why are you crying?" she asked. "तुम क्यों रो रहे हो?" उन्होंने पूछा। "I lost my axe," lied Kalu. "मैंने अपनी कुल्हाड़ी खो दी," कालू ने झूठ बोला। The Goddess dived into the water. देवी ने पानी में डुबकी लगाई। She came out holding a golden axe. वह सोने की कुल्हाड़ी लेकर बाहर आईं। "Is this your axe?" she asked. "क्या यह तुम्हारी कुल्हाड़ी है?" उन्होंने पूछा। Kalu's eyes shined with greed. कालू की आँखें लालच से चमक उठीं। "Yes! Yes! That is mine!" he shouted. "हाँ! हाँ! वह मेरी है!" वह चिल्लाया। "Please give it to me." "कृपया इसे मुझे दे दें।" The Goddess became very angry. देवी बहुत क्रोधित हुईं। "You are a liar and a cheat," she said. "तुम झूठे और धोखेबाज हो," उन्होंने कहा। "This axe belongs to me." "यह कुल्हाड़ी मेरी है।" "Because you lied, you will get nothing." "चूंकि तुमने झूठ बोला, तुम्हें कुछ नहीं मिलेगा।" She disappeared into the water instantly. वह तुरंत पानी में गायब हो गईं। She took the golden axe with her. वह सोने की कुल्हाड़ी अपने साथ ले गईं। She did not return his iron axe either. उन्होंने उसकी लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी भी नहीं लौटाई। Kalu sat there crying for real. कालू वहां सचमुच रोता रहा। He lost his own axe due to greed. लालच के कारण उसने अपनी कुल्हाड़ी खो दी। He returned home empty-handed and sad. वह खाली हाथ और उदास घर लौटा।
